CONSULTATION WORKSHOP ON GENDER INCLUSION ON THE NATIONAL ADAPTATION PLAN ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Civil Societies stress on an inclusive framework for an effective revised National Climate Change Adaptation Plan.

Civil societies attending the GDA organised consultation workshop on Climate change adaptation are now conversant with the level of implementation of the Plan from its inception. Interestingly, the climate change adaptation Plan was an internationally inspired initiative proposed to states for their environmental programmes relating to climate change adaptation frameworks.

Consequently, in the absence of finances purportedly promised by international donors, the plan, whose first phase was to begin in 2015 up 2020 and to continue forthwith with the second phase from 2020 to 2025,  has incurred in the process very mitigating results obliging the government to initiate a review

This review thus endorsed by the united Nations coordinating framework on climate change (UNCCC) is to be achieved within a time frame of 36 months whereby a much more comprehensive and integrated plan would be set up.

The representative of the coordinating administrative department (the Ministry of the environment and Nature Protection - MINEPDED) Dr. Tsama Valerie was very optimistic in the the perspectives of the new plan being much more successful considering that the shortcomings and lapses observed in the previous one were taken into consideration and set to be improved upon.

Significant among these shortcomings was the sidelining of the civil society in the decision making process as well as placing the gender issue at the backbench of the Plan’s priorities.The workshop did reiterate these aspects in its recommendations and as one participant, Therese of RADD would insist, “ if the civil society is not actively integrated in the decision making process of the Plan, it is certain that the Plan would fail again”.

The full involvement of the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Family is another feature that the workshop was able to lay greater emphasis on and which the administration conceded had failed to consider earlier on.

The perspectives of having a much more active plan seem to be showing with the work so far carried out within the first year of the revision period. Pursued within this spirit, the coming two years may produce greater results especially if all the stakeholders in this initiative are brought on board.

GDA remains resolute in advancing climate change adaptation efforts through strengthened collaboration and synergy with other stakeholders.
