Taking the forefront in the fight for climate justice and reparations
The Ethan Palace Hotel in Nkolfoulou, Yaounde was the venue of the third Women Climate Assembly meeting bringing together twelve member and partner countries clamouring for justice and reparations in the climate issues African countries are confronting.
An eco-feminist alignment determined to turn the tides in the inordinate arrangements governments and multilateral organizations are making in addressing climate change, the Yaounde sitting was a masterstroke in making the voices of the women heard across the continent and the world at large. It served as the launching pad of an eco-feminist movement resolved to ensure that the woman was fully integrated in the policy making process in matters relating to climate change, climate justice and the reparations of bespoiled environments by multinational capitalist extractivist companies across Africa.
Representation at this four-day meeting comprised the sponsor organization Womin African Alliance, civil society organizations and women community leaders from Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon. Observers were to realise just as the participants would, that all of them shared similar concerns regarding the conservation of their forests and the exploitation of the natural resources of their countries.
The objective of the WCA was therefore to reinforce the oneness of their pre-occupations as outlined in the theme: “Our lands, our voices: African women united for climate justice and reparations. A slogan that reverberated across the four-day discussions covering not only the central theme but as well issues relating to women leadership and community-based alternatives centred on food sovereignty and sustainable resource management.
